Kanchanaburi is the largest of the western provinces of Thailand, 129kms from Bangkok and the third largest province of Thailand. Neighboring provinces are (clockwise, from the north) Tak, Uthai Thani, Suphan Buri, Nakhon Pathom, and Ratchaburi. In the west Kanchanaburi borders with Myanmar.
Here is the source of Kanchanaburi’s two most important rivers Maenam Khwae Noi (Little Kwai River) and Maenam Khwae Yai (Big Kwai River), which merge at Kanchanaburi city, with a population of only 35.000 people, to form the Mae Klong River. The notorious Death Railway passes through the town and runs over the Bridge on the River Kwai
Winters here are dry and very warm, April is the hottest
month of the year. The monsoon season runs from May through October, with heavy rain and cooler temperatures,
but it remains always warm in Kanchanaburi.
Kanchanburi province is famous for its freshwater fish. Most of the local rural people work in agriculture. Important industries include sugar, agricultural products, and jewelry. Tourism is also a main source of income for the locals
Because of its beautiful landscape Kanchanaburi has become nowadays a major tourist destination for both Thais and foreigners. Attractions include well-known waterfalls like Erawan waterfall and Say Yoke waterfall. Several national parks are located in the mountainous forests of the province: Erawan, Sai Yok, Khao Laem, Thong Pha Phum, Khuean Srinagarindra, and Chaloem Rattanakosin National Parks, although tourists are mostly attracted by the World War II Bridge over the River Khwae (or "Kwai") and the Death Raylway.
Whether it’s fishing, rafting, canoeing, mountain biking, bird-watching, elephant and jungle trekking, Kanchanaburi offers all. In north and west Kanchanaburi, the terrain is mainly of mountains and high plains, with a natural border between Thailand and Myanmar at the famous Three Pagodas Pass.
Kanchanaburi is an excellent destination for nature lovers.
